This recipe for slow-cooked, brown sugar and cinnamon flavored homemade applesauce couldn’t be easier or more delicious and much better than the store-bought. Great used as a condiment or garnish.

Finally headed to Emma Krumbees – I had been hearing about this place since my daughter was born. I was not disappointed! A true treasure trove of all things apple: caramel apples, apple cider doughnuts, applesauce and apple pie. Plus so many different apple varieties, of course.

We wondered about the apple orchard for almost two hours and… and it picked up… and collected. I left with about 15 pounds of apples, knowing full well that some of it would go towards making homemade applesauce.

Have you ever made applesauce? It’s SO easy. It’s so easy, I can’t really remember the last time I bought it in the store. What’s even easier is making crockpot applesauce!

All you need are 4 ingredients: apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla (and water). The aroma of slow cooking in your house all day is practically intoxicating, and served hot is the bomb, guys.

This is really one of those recipes where you can’t go wrong with any type of apple. That said, we know that not all apples taste the same. How long does homemade applesauce last? Applesauce is a great gift for any time of year, but once you make it, it only lasts a week in the fridge.

Can applesauce be frozen? Yes! Wait until completely cooled, then pour it into a firm, freezer-safe container, such as a mason’s jar or a resealable plastic freezer bag. (If you are using a firm container, leave a 1-inch gap between the applesauce and the lid to avoid difficulties opening it after freezing, as the sauce will expand. If you use a freezer bag, flatten it and squeeze out excess air. This also makes storage easier.) Either way, be sure to label your container with the recipe name and storage date. Usually, frozen applesauce will last up to 2 months. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight, then use within 3-4 days.

How to Canner Applesauce

: It is my understanding that applesauce is inherently safe to can in a water bath due to the high acidity and sugar content of the apple. But this particular applesauce recipe hasn’t been tested that way and isn’t stable on the shelf.

You can serve it as a snack, side dish or seasoning! I love it with breaded pork chops, homemade pierogi and potato latkes.
