Russian Hill is well known for its one-block stretch of winding road consisting of eight hairpin bends. The hill’s name dates back to the gold rush era, when settlers found a small Russian burial ground at the top of the hill. the cemetery was removed but the name remains to this day. According to some, the graves belonged to Russian merchants and sailors from nearby Fort Ross and the former Russian outpost north of San Francisco.

Located near North Beach, Telegraph Hill was originally called Loma Alta by the Spanish, which translates to “high hills” in English. Telegraph Hill’s current name refers to a semaphore, a windmill-like structure built in 1849, for the purpose of signaling to the rest of the city the nature of the ships entering the Golden Gate. Crowning the hill with its impressive art and beautiful history, Coit Tower is definitely one of the biggest attractions in the area today.
