I have

to admit I’m not a big fan of Doner kebabs, at least I wasn’t until I made mine! I already have a

lamb doner recipe In this place it cooks very quickly in the oven. But I was so eager to try a fake slimming-friendly doner kebab in my slow cooker.

And boy I’m glad I did it!! This was a total treat for the crowd and I couldn’t help but eat a little A LOT while cutting it! Even my notoriously fussy kids LOVED it!

MEAT DONOR RECIPE

I’m always looking for new family recipes for minced beef, apart from the ever-popular Bolognese sauce and Chilli Con Carne .

This beef doner recipe uses lean ground beef and a few other ingredients: it literally takes five minutes to prepare and then its slow cooker does all the work.

This homemade Doner kebab is actually syn free at Slimming World if you use lean ground beef, a far cry from your average Doner kebab!

Homemade beef cut into thin strips on a marble board

It is also suitable for those on the Keto diet if you use minced meat with 20% fat (basically the opposite of SW). I have to admit that this is a bit tastier if you use minced meat with a little fat, as it makes the meat juicier.

Cutting Doner beef is a lot of fun and tastes great served as a kebab or salad, I’ve even eaten leftovers with eggs for breakfast.

How to make Slow Cooker Doner

Full measurements and instructions can be found on the printable prescription card at the bottom of the page. Please take a look at the steps and video before trying this recipe!

STEP 1 Put the minced meat in a large bowl and break with a wooden spoon. Sprinkle with paprika, cayenne, cumin, garlic powder, dried oregano, baking soda and salt.

Bowl with ground beef, spices and herbs

STEP 2 Add the crumbled broth cubes and mix well, using your hands or the back of a spoon. For best results, you might want to bombard everything in a food processor (or even a stand-up mixer) to create a paste, but this creates a lot of washing, so I usually don’t bother!

STEP 3 Form the Doner mixture into a log and wrap it tightly with two layers of aluminum foil. You want to compress the meat as much as possible to make it easy to cut.

STEP 4 Crush two pieces of aluminum foil and place them in the slow cooker. Use a skewer to make some holes in the meat roll and place it in the cooking pot. Cover and cook at a low setting for 5-6 hours or until meat registers 70C/160F when checked with a meat thermometer.

STEP 5 Let the meat cool slightly and then cut thin slices with a sharp knife or potato peeler.

STEP 6 Fry the strips of meat to heat them if desired. Serve with toast pita bread or my easy two-ingredient flatbreads.

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR SERVING

CHANGE IT I used lean ground beef in this recipe, but you can replace it with minced lamb if you prefer, or even a mixture of beef and lamb. I haven’t tried it yet, but I think minced turkey meat would also work well.

SW DONER KEBAB Use a whole wheat wrap (a WW wrap is allowed as an extra healthy, but if not used as HE is 6 syns) and serve with sliced onions, lettuce, tomatoes and low-fat mayonnaise/salad cream/hot sauce. Or serve as a salad bowl packing a bunch of veggies and skipping the wrap.

SASAL! I have to say that I am partial to almost all the sauces in my kebabs. I love mixing sour cream with yellow mustard and ketchup and adding a splash of Sriracha for a good measure!
