A review of Subways bread selection – Student Life

If the line out the door at lunchtime every day is any indication, we as students love the subway. With its wide selection of sandwiches, there’s something for everyone, but sometimes all the options (meat, toppings, sauce, bread) can be quite overwhelming. To help with a step in the ordering process, below is a review of the various bread options Subway offers. I tried all six toasties with the same fillings, which seem to go with any type of bread: turkey, provolone, tomato, lettuce, and mayonnaise, which may have led subway employees to think I have a much greater appreciation for sandwiches than turkey I really do.

Italian

Reading: Subway artisan italian bread

calories per 6” serving: Italian 200 bread not only has the lowest number of calories, but it is also the bread that will accompany any type of sandwich. the bread has a smooth texture with a slightly flaky exterior and a neutral flavor. that is, it does not have a sweet taste or the addition of cheese and spices to enhance the bread. If you’re looking for a tasty bread, Italian may not be the one for you, but if you want your sandwich fillings to stand out, Italian is the way to go.

flatbread

calories per 6” serving: 220 in texture, the flatbread is the most distinctive of the Subway bread selection. Unlike other breads, which are long rolls, flatbread is, as its name suggests, flat, and also denser. its texture is soft and chewy, somewhat similar to that of pita. its flavor is largely neutral, but it has a hint of sweetness and flouriness that can conflict with some saltier or hotter flavors, such as buffalo sauce.

monterey cheddar

calories per 6” serving: 240 This bread has a more distinct flavor than the previous two. the cheese, though subtle, adds flavor to white bread. the melted cheese also adds a bit of crunch to the soft texture of the bread. It’s great if you’re a cheese lover and looking to make your sandwich even cheesier.

Italian herb and cheese

calories per 6” serving: 250 Italian herbs and cheese was the tastiest bread I’ve ever tasted. True to its name, it has a distinctive herbal flavor with a more subtle cheesy aftertaste. melted cheese, like in monterey cheddar, adds a bit of crunch to the otherwise soft bread. this bread is particularly good with Italian sandwiches, but can add a bit of flavor to any sub.

9 grain wheat bread

calories per 6” serving: 210 While Italian is the most neutral bread, it comes in second for being good for any sandwich. It doesn’t have a distinctive enough flavor to interfere with fillings, but it does have the slightly sweet flavor common to all wheat breads. its texture is smooth with little flaking.

oatmeal with honey

calories per 6” serving: 260 This is the sweetest of all breads. the honey is definitely evident in the flavor of the bread. It is a soft bread with oat flakes on the outside. while it worked well with a turkey sandwich, I don’t expect it to complement many other types of sandwiches. perhaps ones with sweeter flavors, like teriyaki chicken, would complement the bread well, but I’d avoid using it for savory sandwiches.
